Post Define a Backmarker?  Reply with quote
I noticed that there had been no posts in this thread since 2009! So, I thought that I would start one.

How do we define a backmarker?

Is it someone in the last 10% of the field. Maybe the last 15%?

If you ever see results of a race, or even view a race as a spectactor, you will notice that runners finish a race in a diamond shape.

What I mean is that a few runners come in at first, then there are hundreds, and finally it tails off so very few finish towards the back.

From experience, although I am by no means the fastest body on the planet, I can also tell you from experience that it is very difficult to finish last in a big race!

So, at what point do you become a "backmarker". All comments would be interesting to read.

Ken, I agree. Someone has to come last but it is difficult to try and finish last. I battled to finish last in a marathon this year and there were only 14 runners!

Maybe the last 5% or someone that is in the last 5% always. I consider myself a backmarker but as you say nearly always there will be someone even slower. I am one of the last 10 runners in races frequently but I tend to run smaller races. I've been last twice but never on a road race, only on the trails.

I have been second to last on a trail race. Very humbling experience!

I am a newbie, but I have already realised I will never be competative in races, not overall, nor in my gender, nor in my age group.

So I am an alsoran, to use a phrase from a different website, or a backmarker but in a strange way I am totally happy with that.

In 1999, I ran a race like that - the once-off event "Losberg Ultra" in Fochville.

I an what was then a reasonable time of 5:46 and finished 15th .... out of 16!

They actually had 18 starters but 2 people bailed.
